"Iron" Mike Lyons joined the Main Event in October of 2004, and has left an indelible mark on the radio program. Having been a journeyman wrestler for over 15 years, he brings a wrestler's perspective to the show. He has wrestled in Canada and around the world and can wrestle virtually any style there is.
He began my wrestling career in 1991 at the young age of 18, training under Dino Bravo shortly before his death and with former [WWWF] Tag Team champion Gino Brito. He had the chance to learn from two great workers and was able to meet many of the WWE superstars of that era thanks to his association with Gino Brito, who at the time was a promoter for Vince McMahon. Early on Mike practiced with the "Macho Man" Randy Savage, which is still of the favorite moments of his career. Following his training, Lyons began to compete in his hometown of Montreal in several different federations. He then went down to New Brunswick and worked for Emile Dupree's (the uncle of Rene) Grand-Prix wrestling in New Brunswick.
In 1993 when he returned to his hometown, he was given the award for Quebec's "Rookie of the Year". Shortly thereafter his home promotion became the RWR, where he recieved my first big push, and won his first championship titles as both a singles wrestler and as a tag team (with Raymond Field). Between 1995-1999, he bid my time wrestling in many different areas and promotions winning heavyweight gold in the RWR, ICW, CCW, WAW, and NCW; which were five of the major Canadian territories at the time (NCW still is).
In 1999, Mike Lyons would sign a large contract with Jacques Rougeau who had a vision that would come to be known as "Lutte Internationalle 2000", or LI2000. He ended up working for the man formerly known as "the Mountie" for four years as a wrestler, trainer, and part-time referee. Doing great gates with large crowds, Mike had the chance to work with many great talents like former NWA champion Ronnie Garvin, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, the late Earthquake, the Road Warriors, Kurrgan, Pierre-Carl Oulette, the Prisonners, and of course the Rougeaus (Jacques, Raymond, JJ, Armand). He also had a great time refereeing the matches contested between midgets, including Tiger Jackson who was formerly Dink in the WWF. Mike also aided Jacques in the training of many of the young indy stars of today.
After a fall out with Jacques Rougeau, Mike Lyons and former WCW Hardcore and 3-Time WWE/F Tag Team Champion Pierre-Carl Oullette ended up leaving in 2003 and became a tag team in the newly-formed NWA territory by the name of CWA, or the Canadian Wrestling Association. Along with their manager Don Callis (ECW's Cyrus), they caused havoc in the promotion until he was sidelined for six months with an arm injury. "After pretty much wrestling full-time for over a decade, it felt wierd not being in the squared circle," said Mike Lyons in January 2007.
During his time out of the ring, he spent his time working out and rekindling the passion with his long-time girlfriend and the love of his life Mary Louise. Also at this time he met up with Mr. Ryan Rider and Gavin "Loose Cannon" Schwartz, who he would quickly become good friends and partners with to this day.
In 2004, Mike returned to the ring for the ICW and worked there for the remainder of the year. In October of that year, he nearly regained the Quebec Heavyweight title in one of his best matches against Nico the Prince. Aside from the ICW, he also did a couple of shows for NWA/ACW at that time, working with great talents such as the Mad Dogg, Tommy Rich, and former NWA World Champion AJ Styles. After leaving the ICW in mid-2005, he returned to the Canadian Wrestling Association, which had now become a member of the newest incarnation of the AWA (American Wrestling Association). Since then, he has been touring across Canada full-time in many territories once again as part of AWA Canada and am currently one of the top contenders for the AWA Canadian Title, which he held for a brief period of time in mid-2006. He also recently made another comeback in the ICW.
At 33 years old, Mike Lyons is still young, still going strong, and is in the prime of his career. "When I was 12 years old I fell in love with the WWE, and I still am today. I still try to catch both Raw and Smackdown! whenever I have a chance. I love to entertain, be in front of a crowd; especially for the fans who bought their tickets, that's what wrestling is all about. I've been in this business for a long time now and have done everything there is to do. I can wrestle, I can talk, I can train, I can referee. After all these years I still love the sport of professional wrestling and all the fans that have supported me or payed to see me on a card over the years," said Mike Lyons who still has an honorary position of "Consultant" on Main Event Radio.
